a safe, rewarding, and budget-friendly way to spend.
A money order is a prepaid payment method used to send a specific amount of money to another person or business.
You pay for the money order upfront, so the recipient does not have to worry about the payment bouncing because of insufficient funds.

How Does a Money Order Work?
You purchase a money order for a specific amount from an institution that offers them.
You generally:
Pay the full amount of the money order plus any fee.
Enter the name of the person or business receiving the payment.
Fill in your information if required.
Give or send the money order to the recipient.
The recipient deposits or cashes it.
Because you already paid for it, the funds are effectively secured before the money order is issued.
Where Can You Get a Money Order in Canada?
Money orders may be available from:
Banks
Credit unions
Canada Post
Other authorized financial service providers
Fees and maximum amounts can vary depending on where you purchase one.
When Would You Use a Money Order?
A money order can be useful when:
The recipient does not accept personal cheques
You do not want to send cash
You need a more secure form of payment
You do not have a chequing account
A business specifically requests guaranteed funds
They are often used for payments that need more certainty than a regular cheque.
Money Order vs. Cheque
The biggest difference is when the money is taken.
With a personal cheque, the funds usually remain in your account until the cheque is deposited.
With a money order, you pay the amount upfront.
This reduces the risk that the payment will be returned because there is not enough money available.
Money Order vs. Bank Draft
Both are prepaid forms of payment.
A bank draft is typically issued directly by a financial institution and is often used for larger transactions.
Money orders are generally better suited to smaller payments and may be available from more types of providers.
Can a Money Order Be Cancelled?
Possibly, but it can be difficult once the recipient has cashed or deposited it.
Keep your receipt after buying a money order. It may contain information needed to track or replace the payment if it is lost or stolen.
Contact the issuer as soon as possible if there is a problem.
Are Money Orders Safe?
Money orders can be safer than sending cash because they are made payable to a specific recipient.
However, fake money orders do exist.
If someone sends you a money order unexpectedly and asks you to send some of the money back, be cautious. Verify the payment before sending money or providing goods.
Is a Money Order the Same as Cash?
No.
A money order represents a specific prepaid amount, but the recipient still needs to cash or deposit it.
It is better thought of as a secure prepaid payment method rather than physical cash.
For smaller payments where electronic transfers or cards are not practical, a money order can provide a relatively simple way to send guaranteed funds.
